Okay, this would have nothing to do with my status as a Church Lady were it not for the hope that someday I could work my way up to a gingerbread replica of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame (or some other beloved place of worship). For now, we're just thrilled that this "domestic church" is still firmly standing.

Having only built the Basilica in cardboard (for my graduation cap), I aspire to your levels of culinary genius.
Looks good (in many senses of the word: metaphysically, aesthetically, and palatably).
Actually, Lucy, we considered the idea of omitting the gingerbread if we could find a look-alike substitute (such as cardboard or a thin plywood in an appropriate color). The royal icing is pretty easy to work with and really does have a cement-like quality, and the candy is what you make of it. It's the gingerbread that warps or does unexpected things as it bakes.
